Volume Control 2

When: Sun., June 15, 7 p.m. 2008
Price: $10-$20

The poets performing at June 15's "Volume Control 2" spoken word showcase -- among them Aimee Suzara, Rodrael Guadalupe, and the group Proletariat Bronze -- mostly come from the Saul Williams lineage of spoken word. As a general rule, they are enterprising, highly literate artists who came up right before Russell Simmons launched Def Poetry Slam on MTV, and formed their own crews in the fashion of hip-hop artists. They speak in the same gritty, rhythmic cadence as most underground rappers, though their lyrics are more figurative, and usually more searing (i.e., the Proletariat Bronze poem "Chemo," which describes a medical procedure through the filter of a love poem). Sunday's showcase takes place at EastSide Cultural Center (2277 International Blvd., Oakland). 6 p.m., $10-$20. Proceeds benefit the 2009 APIA Spoken Word & Poetry Summit. EastSideArtsAlliance.com
