There's something heartening about all the Seventies and Eighties punk bands that are still around: Melvins, X, Saccharine Trust, Agent Orange, Bad Brains, The Germs -- the list goes on. Some say the ire and idealism (or cynicism) of the original punk movement has been lost or diminished, but often the energy and sound remains, as if the decades between then and now didn't happen. Such is the case with San Francisco punk band VKTMS (pronounced "victims"), whose lead singer, Nyna "Napalm" Crawford, is part of a ferocious tradition of punk frontwomen that includes Siouxsie Sioux and ExeneCervenka. VKTMS spent its early years playing with other Bay Area punk bands like Dead Kennedys, DOA, and Mutants, cutting its teeth as the opening act for more established bands when it toured the country. And after a long hiatus, VKTMS is back and as loud as ever. The band performs with Meat Sluts and Scrapers at the Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Jan. 5. 9:30 p.m., $7.
