Biography, Drama
This straightforward narrative account of the life and works of Hildegard von Bingen (convincingly played by actor Barbara Sukowa) presents the 11th-century German nun as the first modern woman – a human and kind-hearted combination of religious devotee, scientist, and problem-solver, fully recognized by the Roman Catholic church for her forward thinking. That noted, there’s not much of a story arc in veteran filmmaker Margarethe von Trotta’s (Rosa Luxemburg, The Lost Honor Katharina Blum) admiring peek behind the convent walls, but plenty of female solidarity and beautiful scenes of the forests and valleys of the Rhineland. Direction and screenplay by Trotta. Costarring Heino Ferch as a sympathetic friar. (110 min.)
