“Owner/waiter/entertainer” Castro Ascarrunz is the source of Vino’s charm. He bustles around his tiny restaurant, tossing out dry jokes in his wake, and occasionally sits down to play smoky lounge music on the piano at back. Dishes like sardines with olives, Basque meatballs, and shrimp in spicy mushroom sauce sample from Ascarrunz’ Basque, Italian, and South American heritage. All are simple, familiar, casual — the kind of food you eat at small-town cafes and Tuesday-night family dinners across Europe.
