When: Mon., July 6, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $10

Led by fabulously talented saxophonist PrasantRadhakrishnan, VidyA is a local group with an internationalist sensibility. Radhakrishnan plays Carnatic music, a classical form from South India. Having graduated from University of Southern California's prestigious jazz studies program, he's a master technician with fascinating ideas about rhythm and tone. More importantly, he's able to blend two disciplines into a cohesive whole. East-West music appears to be gaining currency in the jazz world, but few do it with Radhakrishnan's degree of polish and panache. He'll grace Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero W, Oakland) on Monday, July 6, with David Ewell on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums. 8 p.m., $10. Yoshis.com
