Crime drama, Thriller
A young Spanish woman exits a Berlin dance club in the wee small hours of the morning, drunkenly joins a quartet of street hoods, then spends the next two hours – filmed in one, long continuous take – getting into one kind of serious, lethal trouble after another in the German capital. Director Sebastian Schipper’s narrative noggin-grinder lets the single-take handheld camera gimmick do most of the work, but actress Laia Costa is actually pretty good as the title character, a loose leaf floating on a sea of casual violence. It’s an anti-heroic story that challenges us to empathize, with a trance-inducing music track by composer Nils Frahm and DJ Koze. Not for everyone, but the most interesting films seldom are. Screenplay by Schipper, Olivia Neergaard-Holm and Eike Frederik Schulz. Costarring Frederick Lau as Sonne (138 min.).
