Very Be Careful

When: Fri., Jan. 13, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $7

Born of peripatetic Spanish minstrels traveling the hills and valleys of Colombia two centuries ago and then fused with influences from Europe and elsewhere, vallenato is basically one of the best arguments we have for the power of musical cross-pollination. And no contemporary act takes that ethos further than LA's Very Be Careful, whose very name manages to turn itself inside out in your mouth and whose sound employs accordions, cowbells, African drums, and wooden folk instruments along with bass and guitar. But make no mistake: These aren't over-intellectualized hipster mashups-- just straight-up South-of-the-border party music, something like old-school funk with a Spanish accent. The band is hitting up Vitus (201 Broadway, Oakland) on Friday, Jan. 13; get ready to dance. 9 p.m., $7.
