This thoughtful Canadian-produced documentary, one of several on the epochal Three Gorges Dam project in China, observes a few of the uprooted lives in the project’s wake -- especially a teenage girl obliged to drop out of school in order to take a service job aboard a tourist cruise ship to support her family, and an over-confident young man working on the same boat. The scenery is awe-inspiring, but the faces of the residents left behind in the Yangtze River’s “drowned cities” tell a different story. Written and directed by Yung Chang, a Chinese Canadian who works out of Montreal (93 min.).
