Unquiet Form

Simon Tran’s work already exists at Jack London Square (between Washington and Broadway) and in Oakland’s Chinatown along the wall of a furniture store. In these larger-than-life murals, Tran, aka Ghost Ghost Teeth, paints bursts of flowing patterns in energetic pastel hues and grays that are inspired by post-punk culture and his Vietnamese American heritage. Now, in response to our current political climate and Saturday morning cartoons, Tran presents Unquiet Form, a solo exhibition that gives viewers even more to take in. With layers of tangled strokes, camo-like shapes, and identifiable illustrations beneath the designs, Unquiet Form might appear overly complex but it’s composed well. “Dat Yum Yum,” for example, features a drawing of a magenta-faced boy in a red beanie, an also magenta-colored left hand with its first three fingers up, and an obscure smiley face, all meshed into Tran’s repetitive, fluid yet linear style. The exhibit will open on Sept. 1 at the Compound Gallery.
