Rated R · 2006
Director Len Wiseman continues the vampires-versus-werewolves saga that brought him success and a hot actress (Kate Beckinsale) for a wife -- now with more rain-drenched European sewers and overly complicated storylines that want to be epic but come off as cheap soap opera. Basically, outcast vampire Selene (Beckinsale) and her boyfriend were-vamp hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) are on the run when they discover that the world's oldest and most powerful vampire (Tony Curran) is looking to find the oldest, most powerful werewolf (Brian Steele) so that they can team up and probably do bad stuff. Our heroes have to try to stop them, but first they must visit various characters to obtain yet more chunks of convoluted backstory, plus weapons. This would be a lot more fun as a videogame, but it's passably diverting entertainment as is, even if Wiseman's obvious inspiration, Guillermo del Toro, could probably crank out something like this while blindfolded with both hands tied behind his back.
