Undercover Presents: Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon'

When: Sun., Jan. 22, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $15, $20

It might revolve solely on tributes, but the quarterly musical project UnderCover has a pretty exciting discography, including homages to Velvet Underground & Nico(under the direction of violinist Charith Premawardhana) and The Pixies' Doolittle (with bass clarinetist Aaron Novik at the helm). And now, trumpeter Darren Johnston has recruited a dozen ensembles to reinterpret Pink Moon, the album that went unnoticed after its 1971 release but later became a canonical gem. This iteration will feature reworkings by Balkan brass band Brass Menažeri, saxophonist David Boyce, indie string group Ramon and Jessica, Johnston's own Broken Shadows Family Band (which he describes as "country-jazz"), singer Freddi Price of the soul revival group Lord Loves a Working Man, the Real Vocal String Quartet, and Jazz Mafia, among others. They premiere their work at Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St., San Francisco) on Sunday, Jan. 22. 7:30 p.m., $15-$20.
