Science fiction
A mysterious young “woman” from somewhere in space is trolling the neighborhoods of Glasgow, Scotland, for unattached men to victimize – and she looks exactly like Scarlett Johansson in a black wig. Johansson is convincingly cast as the chilly predator in director Jonathan Glazer’s unnerving sci-fi creep-out, fully outfitted with gorgeous dark cinematography (by Daniel Landin), some truly bizarre visual effects, and Mica Levi’s other-worldly music score. British filmmaker Glazer (Sexy Beast) shrouds the essentially routine alien-invasion story – based on a novel by Michael Faber, with screenplay by Glazer and Walter Campbell – in a hushed, apprehensive cocoon of dulled sensations and delayed reactions. That, plus Levi’s scratchy music and Johansson’s damped-down menace, is enough to keep us awake at night, long after we’ve seen this. Recommended (107 min.).
