UC Veteran: New President Must Stick It to Schwarzenegger

The San Francisco Chronicle's Tanya Schevitz has written a terrific and useful story about incoming UC President Mark Yudof, as well as the enormous challenges he faces. While Yudof has faced down governors over university budgets before (most notably with Minnesota guv Jess Ventura), he's spent the last few weeks making nice to everyone, even smoking stogies with Schwarzenegger and yukking it up. Meanwhile, the university system has been staggered by massive budget cuts earlier in the decade, and now Schwarzenegger intends to slash hundreds of millions more from the budget, forcing student fees to astronomical levels. Stanton Glantz, the former chair of the UC Committee on Academic Planning and Budget, told the Chron, "The concern I have is that Yudof is building a good relationship with the governor and the (Assembly) speaker. What he needs to be forced to do is to confront that reality. The trajectory Schwarzenegger has put UC on is to raise fees to $18,000 or to fall apart." Read the whole thing; it's sobering and thorough.
