Tzigane Society

When: Sat., April 13, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $7

If you're in the mood for slightly off-center pop music, check out Warbler, Tzigane Society, Spooky Flowers, and Yevtushenkoat at Awaken Cafe (1429 Broadway, Oakland) on Saturday, Apr. 13. Similar to how Sufjan Stevens tweaks folk, Warbler takes introspective, acoustic guitar and layers electronic elements that range from soft synths to heady psychedelic beats. Led by Oakland songwriter Sean Sullivan -- who has a gift for strong melodies that, even at their most experimental, feel personal and poignant -- the band plans to play new material off its new album, set to be released in June. Elsewhere in the lineup, San Francisco outfit Tzigane Society injects its pop sound with Sixties rock, Brazilian beats, and a heavy dose of blues, thanks to its soulful female vocalist. Berkeley's Spooky Flowers does indie-pop with gauzy distortion and hazy vocal harmonies, enough to sound like it could be signed to Slumberland Records. Also heavy on the haze, Yevtushenko will bring its gloomy, grungy pop from Seattle. 8 p.m., $7.
