Director James Toback befriended boxer Mike Tyson during the filming of the former’s The Pick-Up Artist, and the result is an intriguing but necessarily one-sided documentary monologue that answers many, but not all, questions about Tyson’s notorious career as a mad-dog heavyweight champion in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Tyson cries, bristles, and attempts to explain how and why his ghetto-thug persona got the better of him time and again. His recollections are illustrated by news footage, including coverage of his rape conviction, wife-beating allegations, and Tyson’s ear-chomping of Evander Holyfield in the ring in 1997 (90 min.).
