Two-Year Old Gentleman

When: Feb. 4-6, 8 p.m. 2010

Some dance is movement for its own sake; other dance is a deep exploration of the human condition. Brooklyn, NY, choreographer Ronald K. Brown takes the latter approach in Two-Year Old Gentleman, which asks big questions through his signature fusion of African dance, contemporary movement, and spoken word. Inspired by the relationship between Brown's nephew and grandfather, it pays homage to traditions handed from one generation to the next and ponders men's responsibilities to family, community, and self. Brown's Evidence, A Dance Company performs the piece to an original score composed and performed live by Guinean drummer Mamdouba Mohammed Camara. Sharing the bill are Journey, a restaging of the company's collaboration with NickCave; Ife/My Heart; and Grace. The company hosts an audience discussion after the Friday show. At YerbaBuenaCenter for the Arts Novellus Theater (700 Howard St., San Francisco), Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 4-6. 8 p.m., $10-$30. 415-978-2787 or
