Tuya is a no-nonsense contemporary rural Mongolian woman who raises sheep while her disabled husband cares for their children, but she needs more help on the farm -- so she divorces her husband and begins interviewing suitors. Talk about female empowerment. Filmmaker Wang Quanan�s ingratiatingly matter-of-fact drama looks very much like a Western -- beautifully photographed wide open spaces -- but its portrait of life on the steppes is up-to-date and naturalistic. And actor Yu Nan�s earthy performance as Tuya compares favorably with Gong Li�s role as the headstrong peasant protagonist of The Story of Qiu Ju. Stand back and let her work. Co-written and directed by Wang (The Story of Ermei) (86 min.).
