Perfectly serviceable, if a bit long-winded, biodoc of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo uses newsreel shots and talking heads (Joan Allen, Liam Neeson, Nathan Lane, Brian Dennehy, et al.) to explain Trumbo’s turbulent times — the Red Scare of the late ‘40s-early ‘50s, HUAC, the Hollywood Ten, using a “front” for screen credit, etc. Trumbo himself comes across as a renaissance man, although the ad tag line (“He was Hollywood’s greatest screenwriter”) is stretching it a bit even given the evidence of Spartacus and Exodus. Directed by Peter Askin (96 min.).
