Drama, Western
The Old West is a nastier place in this Coen Bros. remake of the 1969 John Wayne-Henry Hathaway version of Charles Portis’ novel about a broken-down US Marshal named Rooster Cogburn (bellowing Jeff Bridges) and teenage girl Mattie Ross (impressive newcomer Hailee Steinfeld) on the trail of the scoundrel who murdered Mattie’s father. As cruel, sudden, and graphic as the violence is, the language is 19th-century flowery, as if to point up the discrepancy between the characters’ Biblical references and the hellishness of life in Arkansas and the Choctaw Nation, circa 1870. Bridges, Steinfeld, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper, and Dakin Mathews (as a flummoxed frontier deal-maker) all fit their roles like a glove, and the Coens’ western revival – begun with No Country for Old Men -- continues with a flourish. Ravishing cinematography by Roger Deakins. Direction and screenplay by Joel and Ethan Coen. (110 min.)
