As a restaurant manager, there is a simple way to deal with Opentable. If you need to fill seats, you put those times on Opentable. If you don't, you block those times.

That is why smart diners know that you should still call the restaurant even if Opentable doesn't show availability.

Also, I played hardball with Opentable about my fees and the amount I pay for each reservation. When I threatened to drop out and pull their hardware, I basically named my own price. I now pay a fraction of my original charges.

Overall, my assessment of Opentable is that the business has been an utter failure. They have burned through over $100 million in venture capital, gone through countless management changes, and have a monopoly on their market, but they can barely sustain a small profit and now facing increase competition from smartphone apps that cost the diner AND the restaurant nothing.
