New Orleans rap artist Kimberly Rivers Roberts tried out her new camcorder by documenting the destruction of her Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005. Ms. Roberts’ startling footage, with her real-time commentary, forms the basis of this smashing documentary by Tia Lessin and Carl Deal (both frequent Michael Moore collabos), which deals more in human perseverance than in the laying of blame. It’s one of the most amazing pieces of unmediated reality you’ll ever see. Great music by Ms. Roberts, trip-hoppers Massive Attack, John Lee Hooker, Free Agents Brass Band, et al. (90 min.).
