Drama, Romance
A poor, unsophisticated, beautiful young woman (Freida Pinto) gets plucked from the dusty countryside of Rajasthan, India by a rich layabout “businessman” from England (Riz Ahmed of Four Lions). But her unspoken hopes for romance and respectability get deferred, and deferred. It’s director Michael Winterbottom’s socially conscious, contemporary adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles, and it’s first-rate. Pinto – in her best role since Slumdog Millionaire – bottles up her emotions and acts with her eyes in the title part, yet we understand everything she’s telling us. For filmmaker Winterbottom (The Trip, The Killer Inside Me), this second stab at Hardy is tighter and more emotionally powerful than his 1996 Jude. Extra added attractions: the thrilling Indian location scenery and the music score by Amit Trivedi and Shigeru Umebayashi. Roshan Seth costars. (113 min.)
