Berkeley pianist Myra Melford, New York drummer Matt Wilson, and San Diego bassist Mark Dresser are all eminent bandleaders and composers responsible for some of the most thrilling and trenchant jazz of the past three decades. Each one contributes tunes to Trio M, a collective ensemble that’s designed for loose and limber improvisation. With their busy schedules, they all hold down faculty positions at top universities, the triumvirate doesn’t get many chances to perform these days. Their second and most recent album, 2011’s Guest House (Enja), was one of the year’s best. The fact that the project was inspired by a meal served up by chef Paul Canales, who went on to open Duende a few blocks away from Piedmont Piano, means it probably won’t be hard to find the trio after the gig.
