.Trib Examines Berkeley Library Bond

Berkeley’s librarians sure would like it if you voted for a $26 million bond measure this November. Measure FF will finance the renovation of the city’s aging libraries by raising property taxes an average of $27 a year. In return, sez the Oakland Tribune, the North Berkeley branch would be seismically retrofitted and expanded by 35 percent, the West Berkeley branch would be retrofitted, expanded, and have its electrical and computer systems improved, the South Berkeley branch would be torn down and rebuilt, and the Claremont branch would expand its lobby and replace its windows. Marie Bowman, a Berkeley resident leading the opposition, wins the acronym prize for her group’s name: Berkeleyans Against Soaring Taxes, or BASTA!
