Drama, Suspense/Thriller
Director Brad Anderson (The Machinist) gets maximum thriller mileage out of the story of a naïve American train buff tourist (Woody Harrelson) and his dissatisfied wife (Emily Mortimer) being opportuned by a drug trafficker (Eduardo Noriega) and his girlfriend (Kate Mara) aboard the title locomotive, chugging through snowy Siberia. The ubiquitous Sir Ben Kingsley flexes his action muscles as a bent Russian narcotics agent. All the actors get their tickets punched, and the screenplay (by Anderson and Will Conroy) doesn’t insult anyone’s intelligence. Nice scene-setting, too — the UK-Germany-Spain-Lithuania production was filmed in Lithuania and China (111 min.).
