The titular tragedy in Will Eno'sTRAGEDY: a tragedy is simply that it's night, and there's no way of knowing if day will come again. The play is in the form of a particularly chaotic newscast in which correspondents intone poetic inanities and report barking dogs as breaking news. It's a hard text to pull off, and director Les Waters and the cast of David Cromwell, Thomas Jay Ryan, Marguerite Stimpson, Max Gordon Moore, and Danny Wolohan manage it beautifully in Berkeley Rep's US premiere. It all sounds terribly bleak, and it is, but some of the lines are hilarious. The obvious parallel is to The Daily Show, but in the end it seems more like a Saturday Night Live sketch that starts funny, drags on even at only seventy minutes, and ultimately derails. Through April 13 at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre (2025 Addison St., Berkeley) or 510-647-2949.
