Action/Adventure, SciFi/Fantasy, Suspense/Thriller
In order to qualify as a Guilty Pleasure, a bad movie needs to be at least half pleasurable. This remake of the Philip K. Dick sci-fi adventure about late-21st-century mind games falls short, narrowly but decisively. On the plus side: superior production design and effects work, especially in the “Fremont” scenes; the physicality of Colin Farrell and Kate Beckinsale as battling spouses bouncing off the walls; and a certain grim sense of fun. The minuses: the Blade Runner ripoff in the aforementioned Fremont sequence; dumb dialogue; a rotten last act; the complete lack of any sense of humor; and the fact that in the heat of action, Beckinsale and Jessica Biel look too much alike. The minuses have it – it’s just an ordinary bad movie. Screenplay by Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback and screen story by Ronald Shusett and Dan O’Bannion plus Jon Povill and Wimmer, adapted from Dick’s previously filmed short story, We Can Remember It for You Wholesale. Also with Bokeem Woodbine and Bryan Cranston (118 min.)
Director: Paul Verhoeven
Writer: Philip K. Dick and Ronald Shusett
Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin, Ronny Cox and Michael Ironside
