Total Control

When: Sun., June 9, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $10

Melbourne, Australia's Total Control has a bit of a split personality. One on hand, the band clearly comes from a breed of skittering, screeching maximalist punk rock; on the other, it owes a heavy debt to post-punk and late-Seventies no wave. On its most recent album, 7"s, the band paves the first half with layers of mangled vocals, distorted guitars, and breakneck drumming; the second half takes on a more krautrock feel, replete with motorik beats. In "Paranoid Video," Total Control veers into territory featuring eerie synths, spacey vocals, and earwormy bass -- like if Joy Division or Wire made dance music with the demonic spirit of the no wave band DNA. With little room to breathe, the album's melodies fold in on themselves, amplified by incredibly raw, almost garage-y production. Total Control feels like one of those criminally underrated underground bands; with any luck, that'll change in the near future. With local acts Grass Widow, Synthetic ID, and Neon Piss at The Uptown (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland).
