When Australian post-punk outfit Total Control last performed in the Bay Area in June 2013, some of the finest local acts clambered to open up both bills. At the now-shuttered Uptown in Oakland, support included Grass Widow and Neon Piss, a couple of the very last shows from either of the highly regarded groups. The anticipation of Total Control’s appearance at the Eagle, meanwhile, made the group seem like it was co-headlining alongside Thee Oh Sees, widely regarded as the city’s mightiest live rock act at the time. Two years later, in Total Control’s first West Coast appearance since 2014’s Typical System — an expansion of the acrid sci-fi concentrate of its debut full-length, Henge Beat — the group brings its own esteemed opener: Royal Headache. Total Control’s countrymen ply different but nonetheless rewarding material, with serrated yet honeyed guitar leads underpinning the vigorous vocals of a fellow known simply as Shogun. Total Control and Royal Headache perform on Thursday at the Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St., San Francisco.)
