In the semi-fictitious East Bay community of “Newmont,” the investigation of a suspicious, lethal bomb blast in a shopping mall food court focuses on one, then a second, teenage boy – both of them killed in the explosion – and ultimately on their grieving mothers. One of the mothers is a Pakistani immigrant (played by actress/model Mahnoor Baloch in her US film debut), trying to hold on to her version of the “American dream”; the other is a single mom who cleans offices for a living (TV regular Dendrie Taylor). Both actresses, especially Taylor as hard-luck case Lea, turn in remarkable performances. And director/co-writer Jeremiah Birnbaum doesn’t hit us over the head with the “us against them” front story. The screenplay is a collaboration of Michael Richter, Marc Posner, and Birnbaum, and costars Faran Tahir and John Heard (80 min.).
