In the famous opening scene to Caryl Churchill’s 1982 play Top Girls, the protagonist, Marlene, sits at a table with a group of famous female figures from throughout history — Isabella Bird, Pope Joan, and Lady Nijo among them. As the night wears on, the women reflect on the sacrifices that they’ve made in their lives in order to achieve success as women. The 2015 season at Shotgun Players (1901 Ashby Ave., Berkeley) is a similar gathering of female perspectives, with all twelve of its plays being female-written. Top Girls is among them, as the third full production of the season, showing through August 2. This production of the well-known script is directed by Delia MacDonald and starred in by Kendra Lee Oberhauser. Top Girls moves on from its dreamy opening sequence to follow Marlene, a merciless career woman at Top Girls Employment Agency. Slowly, it becomes clear how much Marlene has given up in order to get where she is as the play probes further into the pressure she faces to in order to move ahead in a man’s world. Although Top Girls was written decades ago, the double standards it addresses are — unfortunately — still relevant today.
