Drama, Mystery
Dennis Hauck’s trippy-dippy private eye yarn takes a while to get going – the scenes are artfully shuffled to create anti-chronological jitters – but when actor John Hawkes finally settles into his role as investigator-for-hire Sampson, the Los Angeles loser mythology asserts itself and writer-director Hauck’s seemingly dubious gimmicks pay off. Supporting parts are filled out to a high degree of nastiness, especially Dichen Lachman as a pole dancer who doubles as a drive-in-movie operator. It’s that kind of movie. Also among the character actors are Rider Strong, Dash Mihok, Vail Bloom, Crystal Reed, Brett Jacobson, and veteran thesps Robert Forster and Joanna Cassidy, as various lugs and sluts. It’s all so random and cheeky it’s perverse fun to watch (107 min.).
