Tony Joe White

When: Thu., June 12, 9 p.m. 2008
Price: $16

With summer just weeks away, Tony Joe White and his brand of rootsy swamp rock is the perfect soundtrack for the humid nights that lay ahead. Even though this Louisiana native briefly hit the charts via the 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie," he's best known for his song being championed by a variety of artists ranging from Elvis Presley and Brook Benton to Tina Turner and Hank Williams Jr. Nowadays, Shelby Lynne calls him a friend and source of material. The once-reclusive White has been recording more frequently in recent years. His latest, 2006's Uncovered, is a languid, rich, and rough-edged collection of original songs and some covers, many of which he'll undoubtedly be trotting out at Cafe du Nord (2170 Market St., San Francisco) on Thursday, June 12.9 p.m., $16.
