Ten-year-old Laure (played by Zoë Héran) and her younger sister move to a new neighborhood with their parents, and Laure immediately introduces herself to the local kids as a boy named Michael. That’s the setup for Céline (Water Lillies) Sciamma’s quicksilver character study. Young actress Héran plays Laure/Michael with pure naturalism as a girl who thinks and acts like a boy, and writer-director Sciamma treats the potentially overheated scenario as if it were a documentary on the budding of a new type of flower. That’s fine, but it seems like the first episode of a TV mini-series rather than a stand-alone feature film. (82 min.)
