Tom Nunn & Blake McGee

When: Sat., Oct. 24, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $10

Resembling the hybrid of an insect and an end table, the Bug can produce sounds spanning the range of Javanese gamelan, construction sites, and the gastrointestinal tract. Tom Nunn plays this homemade percussion instrument, and others like it, in RTD3, an improvising chamber music trio. The cello, in contrast, is an unassuming instrument, but Doug Carroll gets weird with it. Astonishing sound cracks out of abrasive finger-friction, while bowed endpin works almost entirely subliminally. As a foil to the gritty "rhythm section," Ron Heglin's trombone balances the trio. Often he intones nonsensical syllabic poetry through his horn, sounding like an inquisitive cartoon alien. Their twenty-year working history is audible: the trio expresses incredibly measured restraint and pacing, marks of musicians completely comfortable with their art and collaborators. Synchronous introspection, keeping with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. RTD3 performs on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Flux 53 (5306 Foothill Blvd., Oakland). 8 p.m., $10 sliding scale.
