Actually, plantlover, the fruiting bodies of chanterelles are tertiary mycelium, produced so the fungi can produced more spores. Harvesting, if anything, helps with propagation by scattering the spores. That's what makes this article so disturbing, the fact that for a healthy mushroom population, we need but healthy forests.
