Todd Snider

When: Tue., Feb. 10, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $21

Todd Snider sings with an almost audible wise-guy smirk, and while his songs often have laugh-out-loud punch lines, they're not really funny. Musically he's as much rock as folk and country, with a lack of a convenient pigeonhole that's kept him moving between major and indie labels. He's written hits for mainstream country artists, but his cracked drawl, skewed world vision, and lefty politics make him a hard sell, even though his tunes are as catchy as anything on country radio. His recent Peace Queer mini-album -- he borrowed the title from a Fugs lyric -- includes pastoral instrumentals, folkie protest songs, flat-out rockers, and poetry, so expect the unexpected when Snider plays the Great American Music Hall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco) on Tuesday, Feb. 10. 8 p.m., $21.
