Todd Sickafoose's Blood Orange Club Critics' Pick Staff Pick

When: Wed., Sept. 10, 8 p.m. 2008
Price: $18.50-$19.50

AniDiFranco's cult of personality may have been the key to her success, but she also plays with some phenomenal instrumentalists -- among them Bay Area-born bassist Todd Sickafoose. In June Sickafoose released Tiny Resistors, his third album as a leader and his most exciting work to date. The music is dense with layered instrumentation -- opening track "Future Flora" starts with acoustic and electric guitar, but within a few bars the horns, bells, and keyboards come swirling in -- and darkly romantic chord changes. One of Sickafoose's specialties is taking a seemingly straightforward melodic line and making it sound textured and sophisticated. His pieces aren't technically difficult, but they're often quite evocative. Sickafoose's band Blood Orange shares a stage with Iron & the Albatross and Ara Anderson on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley). 8 p.m., $18.50, $19.50.
