Drama, Romance
Filmmaker Terrence Malick, on a hurry-up schedule (for him), comes up with another narratively sketchy but “deep” tale of dissatisfied human beings caught in the trammels of existence. This time out, a taciturn engineer (Ben Affleck) marries a single mother (Olga Kurylenko) in Paris and brings her and her young daughter (Tatiana Chiline) to a town in Oklahoma where there’s nothing to do but think about the meaning of life. This leads to further boredom, as signified by Malick’s trademark shots of nature in flux, with very, very little dialogue for us to hang our cowboy hats on. Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography is still wondrous, cued as usual to the European classics. But Malick’s writing problems are beginning to seriously dampen his reputation as a wizard. Watch out, Terry. (113 min.)
