Re: “Oakland Zoo Expansion Won't Be Stopped By Knowland Park Referendum

The fight to preserve urban open space never ends. Never.
Once a bulldozer rolls, that opportunity and that open space is gone forever.
Developers will always seek to monetize open space. Always and forever.
They will fight with whatever tools they have available, and therefore we must fight for open space with whatever tools we have as well.
FOKP fought a good fight, but don't ever think it's over.

Re: “Oakland Zoo Campaign Spending Tops $800,000

Seems there's 'Dark Money' all over this thing. If the zoo is turning a net surplus (none dare call it profit..) of roughly half a million dollars a year, I've gotta wonder where the $72m came from they say is "in the bag" for the expansion.

Re: “Oakland Zoo Operators Violate Election Laws

Great point you make, Jdcash. At this point, Ms. Mayor and the City Council are so in bed with Parrot and the zoo, I don't think they'll do a darned thing.
They've been obfuscating the actual nature of Knowland Park for so long, I don't expect much. I've lived just down the road in San Leandro for decades, and I just found out Knowland Park is a former State Park given to the City of Oakland for all to use, not just the zoo. Now they've given Parrot a green light to build his 57 acre, 37.000 square foot three story office and 'conservation theme park' on top of that ridge.

Ah, I knew once they shed some light on the zoo's books, all kinds of shenanigans would come to light....
Good work EB Express!

Re: “Questions Swirl Around Zoo Tax Measure

So now Parrot says they'll go ahead and build their little theme park empire whether the voters like it or not? Well, I guess with enough back room dealings and political slickery, they can get the plans approved by the planning commission.
But they'll not do it with my money!
Good points are made by the commentors above, that if we're going to raise taxes, we've got police and teachers to hire first.
But to give this kind of money to an outfit who's deceptive tactics are there for all to see (just READ the ballot measure!!) is pretty appalling.
The irony of paving over sensitive chapparal and native grassland to honor and educate about endangered species is pretty sick.
We should defend Knowland Park's open space with every ounce of our strength. The moment we relax our stewardship of urban open space, the bulldozers will roll. Then it's gone for good.
