Tish Hinojosa at The Backroom

The line separating American country music and traditional Mexican folk is a thin one. Indeed, Linda Ronstadt proved that in 1987 when she released a multi-platinum album of Spanish-language mariachi songs. Around the same time, a young singer-songwriter named Tish Hinojosa came onto the scene. She scored a couple of modest singles on the country charts: “I’ll Pull You Through” and “Til U Love Me Again.” The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Hinojosa incorporated elements of the folk music her parents listened to and the country music she heard growing up in Texas. This blend would become more pronounced as her career progressed, and she sang in English and Spanish freely. She’s had a long career that’s not only crossed traditional audience fanbase lines, but has demonstrated that genre rules were made to be broken.
