Tindersticks

When: Mon., May 2, 8:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $25, $30
To say the music of England's Tindersticks is cinematic would be a gross understatement. Due largely to the distinctive, deep, slightly warbling voice of singer Stuart Staples, not to mention the grand, dramatic, orchestral nature of its compositions, the band seemed an obvious choice for producing soundtracks. So thought French filmmaker Claire Denis, who commissioned the group to write music for her fourth film, Nénette et Boni, in 1996. The collaboration proved so fruitful that Denis and the band worked together on five more films, the soundtracks of which were just released (four for the first time). To mark the release of the box set, Tindersticks are performing just four times, including on Monday, May 2, at the Castro Theatre (429 Castro St., San Francisco), as part of the San Francisco International Film Festival. Led by Staples, the group (including members David Boulter, Neil Fraser, Dan KcKinna, and Earl Harvin, plus additional strings and brass players) will perform selected works to Denis' images in a seventy-minute set. 8:30 p.m., $25, $30.
