Occasionally, a CD comes around that arouses your cold heart and wrenches some deep-seated emotion that you didn't know existed, or had long forgotten about. In this case, it was Tindersticks' latest, The Hungry Saw, the cover of which features a faint, crude drawing of a saw cleaving a heart -- a simple yet incredibly apt visual representation of the seventh album from this seventeen-year-old British band, now a trio. The album reads like a script to a tragic love story; thoughtfully arranged strings, organ, piano, guitar, and other woodwind and horn instruments craft a dramatic backdrop to which singer Stuart Staples' Leonard-Cohen-like voice impregnates with forlorn, dark-cloud sadness, with an occasionally upbeat, swinging twist. It totally sucks you in. A seven-piece Tindersticks plays with Kira Lynn Cain at the GreatAmericanMusic Hall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco) on Sunday, Mar. 15. 8 p.m., $28.
