Tinariwen

When: Fri., Oct. 11, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $40
Remember when rock ‘n’ roll was dangerous? Even your most daring U.S. rock band doesn’t hold a candle to Tinariwen, which formed in the Saharan desert in the late ’70s and has created true rebel music in the decades ever since. Founder Ibrahim Ag Alhabib built his own guitar as a child after watching a cowboy play one in an old western film. As a child, he witnessed his father’s execution during a political uprising in Mali. Through the years, he and a collective of other Tuareg outcasts and exiles voiced the struggle of their people in song and even took time out from playing music to fight when the time came. The music sounds like the deserts they inhabited with a mixture of traditional Moroccan protest chants, and gritty Western blues and rock ‘n’ roll. The music they play is truly mesmerizing.
