Richard Gere’s performance as a homeless, alcoholic New Yorker with unfinished family business anchors this atypical social drama by writer Oren Moverman (Love & Mercy). The stripped-down portrait of a loser – with screenplay by director Moverman from a story he wrote with Jeffrey Caine – tinges its deep character study with hard-edged, subjective effects to go with the grim reality of the shelters and sidewalks. George (Gere) hears things in his head, and relates to his estranged daughter (Jena Malone) and people on the street through a glass darkly, literally. Fine character support by Ben Vereen, Steve Buscemi, Kyra Sedgwick, and Jeremy Strong. Even finer sound work by a team of mixers, editors, and engineers (120 min.).
