When: Sun., April 26, 8 p.m. and Fri., Oct. 23, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $18.50-$19.50

Punk/folk pioneer Tim Eriksen's contributions toCold Mountain soundtrack provides some of the album's most chilling moments. Eriksen is currently exploring the roots music of the New England states as documented on his recent album, Northern Roots Live, Songs of Life and Death. He has collected eighteen folk songs and shape note hymns familiar to Northern folkies and delivers them in a stark, bare bones setting that amplifies their drama and spiritual power. Hislive performances are noted for their intensity and marked by his raw, singular vocals and his dexterity on guitar, fretless banjo, and fiddle. Tim Eriksenopen for bluesy singer-songwriter Chris Smither at the Freight & Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley) on Friday, Oct. 23. 8 p.m., $20.50, $21.50. TheFreight.org
