Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Kenneth Branagh meets Marvel Comics. Hammer-wielding title Norse god (Chris Hemsworth) and his allies detour to New Mexico and he falls in love with Natalie Portman on the way to killing (for now) the red-eyed frozen skeleton guy who helped Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) take over Asgard and put their father Odin (Anthony Hopkins), king of the gods, at death’s door. Got all that? Branagh’s direction looks the same as that of any other summer tentpole manager, and things go boom. It took eight writers, including Marvel chief Stan Lee, to defrost the screenplay. Fanboys’ delight — all others beware. Costarring Stellan Skarsgård and Kat Dennings. (114 min.)
