Cheyenne, a dissipated former stadium rocker now living in Ireland (Sean Penn), takes his lipstick and goth accoutrements to the US on an urgent personal mission. If we gave that mission away, it would steal whatever mystery this flimsy comic character study has going for it. So all we’ll say is that Penn does what he can as the semi-catatonic ex-pop star – heavy metal rocker drag, Andy Warhol-style breathy line readings – while Italian director Paolo Sorrentino and his screenwriter, Umberto Contarello, get lost in clichéd Americana. Costarring Frances McDormand and Judd Hirsch. See it if you must, but be sure to give this deliberately low-key, exaggeratedly eccentric shaggy dog story plenty of slack (118 min.)
