This Is How It Goes

When: June 14-July 21 2013
Price: $32-$50
In This is How It Goes, Neil LaBute digs right into the topic of modern-day American racism. The playwright has been labeled a provocateur and misanthrope for his past works, and This Is How It Goes is certainly no exception; the play has its fair share of shocking content and rotten characters. Set somewhere in the middle of the country, it features a black man-white woman married couple, whose ill-founded relationship is easily shaken when one of the woman’s old classmates reappears with his high school crush on her still intact. This intruder tells the story from a patently unreliable perspective, letting his own racist tendencies color the action at hand — perhaps. LaBute pulls the rug from under the audience repeatedly, so that at times it seems his sole intention is to teach the audience a lesson about their own assumptions. Amidst all this moralizing, though, is something more lasting: an all-too-real portrayal of a middle-class American as dopey as he is bigoted.
