Third Thursdays in South Berkeley: Mohja Kahf

When: Thu., March 20, 7:30 p.m. 2008
Price: $7-$15

UC Berkeley African American Studies Ph.D candidate and playwright Lisa Marie Rollins -- whose autobiographical show, Ungrateful Daughter, speaks feelingly about the white adoptive mother who collected Aunt Jemima curios and doused Rollins' hair with No More Tangles -- has produced some of the most daring theater works to come out of the Bay Area in recent years. In early March she brought W. Kamau Bell's one-man show, The W. Kamau Bell Curve,to the Jewish Community Center of the EastBay, and she now collaborates with June Jordan's Poetry for the People to mount a monthly spoken word series, dubbed "Third Thursday in South Berkeley," at La Peña Cultural Center. This Thursday's edition features poetry by MohjaKahf, an associate professor of comparative literature at University of Arkansas' Middle East & Islamic Studies Program, beloved hip-hop playwright Aya de León, soul singer Femi, and Chilean poet Ananda Estevez. 7:30 p.m., $7-$15.
